Fall Shack

Fall is here.  Sort of.  In this part of the world (New Jersey, USA) it seems we have slipped from an extremely short, cool, and damp summer directly to a cold and wet winter.  Low 40′s with a constant drizzle or rain going on all day.  So I went out and took a few photographs.  My daughter found this little abandoned building out by her job.  Everything around us seemed so drab and dreary.  I may have punched the colors up a little bit too much but it really brings the photo from a drab display to something a bit more exciting.

Comments and criticism are welcome!

Update: 19 Oct 09

Per my Dad’s comments I tried a Black and White conversion.  It really was drab and boring until I punched the contrast up considerably.  The photo has also gotten a bit of noise which I can’t seem to remove without lowering the contrast again.  I may have to look at a tool like “Noise Ninja” if I’m going to be experimenting much more with this style of photography.

More comments are welcome!

I’ve submitted the following photo for this week’s DPS contest for “Bokeh“.

My Nephew’s Birthday

My nephew had his 2nd birthday not too long ago and naturally I brought my camera along to snap a few shots.  I swear these parties are more for the adults than they are for the kids.  The keg of beer along with the jello shots really helps to reinforce that idea.

I’m in the habit of checking over my main settings when I power up my camera (ISO, Aperature priority mode, etc…) but I missed the fact that I had my flash setup for rear curtain sync from a previous project.  I blame the beer:)  Sadly this resulted in the loss of a lot of (indoor) photos and even the ones I did salvage weren’t particularly good.  I now know why the pros hit “reset” before every shoot.  I’m just glad this wasn’t a paying job or I would have been in serious trouble.

Here’s a couple shots from the day’s events.

I have no idea what time we finally made it home… but it was late!

The Snake and the Frog

It seems that snakes find frogs a delicacy.  It is my understanding that frog legs are quite popular in Europe and some of the states.  I guess this snake figured why settle for just some legs when he can eat the whole thing?

Snake

I caught this guy in my pool yard attempting to make a feast of this frog.  Yes, the frog was still alive, and no, I can’t figure out how this snake managed to catch a frog.   Makes me awfully glad I’m not a frog though!

Trip to North Carolina (Part 3)

Sorry about the delay in posting this.  Besides having a rough 1st week back to work, I ended up with no free time over the weekend due to other commitments.  I actually cut my part 3 down considerably for a couple reasons.   For one, it’s really, really difficult to get good indoor aquarium photos (our adventure for Thursday) when the lighting is pretty much non-existent, there’s 500 kids on a field trip, I wasn’t allowed to use a tripod.  I have lots and lots of blurry photos of sharks, fish, and other marine life.  It seems they didn’t want to hold still for me.  Here’s three that came out O.K.

Both Friday and Saturday were “do nothing” days so I don’t have any photos of places we went.  I will share these last two though.  This first one is a self shot of my wife and I.  I had handed her my remote for my camera (on a tripod) and she had asked me to get a shot of the two of us for her camera.  I liked this image alot and decided to include it here.

What a cute couple!

My final image was again of a sunset.  This one we drove to the other side of the island so I could get a sunset along with the water.  I think it’s a perfect way to end our vacation and say “good-bye” to a really enjoyable trip.

Hope you enjoyed the photos as much as I did.  I’ll be a little quicker posting them next time:)
